China-ASEAN Education & Training Center was founded to implement H.E. Wen Jiabao’s proposal that China is ready to set up ten vocational education and training centers to help ASEAN countries develop human resources needed in economic and social development. It was officially inaugurated in July 2012, jointly approved by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China. Among the ten China-ASEAN Education and Training Centers, it is the only one dedicated to agricultural talents cultivation (especially for ASEAN countries). International College of Yunnan Agricultural University whose purpose is to better facilitate Bridgehead Strategy, improves the level of China-foreign cooperative education, and leads our university to develop into a teaching and research-oriented university. China-ASEAN Education and Training Center and International College of Yunnan Agricultural University are run under the administrative pattern “One organization, two brands with different functions”. Relying on the teaching and administrative resources of YAU, the center is mainly engaged in international students’ degree programs, long/short-term training, China-foreign cooperative education, etc. It is responsible for international students’ teaching and administration, cooperative education among China and other countries, international students exchange programs, "Going Out" school running, Chinese courses (for foreign students), TCSOL, agricultural science and technology training workshops, and other relevant science researches, etc.
Since 1997, YNAU was authorized by Yunnan Education Committee to recruit international students, and last decades witnessed the increasing number of foreign students. Meanwhile, with the growing scale, the quality has been improved continuously, and international students have become an indispensable part of our university. By the guideline from Yunnan Education Board that YNAU should take a big step in expanding the enrollment, YNAU is making more efforts to attract more international students. Consequently, international students’ education gains great development in terms of the enrollment scale, nationalities, study programs, major distributions, education levels as well as the status at university. So far, YNAU has cultivated totally more than 3,500 short/long-term international students from over 20 countries and regions. Now, there are 102 long-term and 96 non-degree international students (enrolled in 2013) at school. Dozens of scholarships, covering all levels, are offered to international students, including Chinese Government Scholarship, Yunnan Provincial Government Scholarship, YNAU scholarship and Hong He Grant.
The international training program has run for over 20 years since 1994 when YNAU initiated short-term cooperative training program on agricultural science and technology with Hanoi Agricultural University to cultivate personnel for Vietnam. Thus, it makes outstanding achievements ranging from a professional teaching and research group, an experienced administrative team to advanced training facilities and technical force. The establishment of Yunnan Agricultural Science and Technology International Training Base as well as China-ASEAN Education and Training Center provides a broader platform for exchanges and cooperation worldwide.
